ln Miami, Vincent Damar slipped the headset off and leaned back wearily. Since he had come in, the back room of Bill Andra’s shop had become more like a noisy bus station. Everybody was looking for information not available on the streets or from commercial sets and it took a good hour to get the crowd out and the doors locked.

Bill threw up his hands in a gesture of disgust. “With all the brains they’re supposed to have in government, you’d think just one of ’em would have an answer to all this.”

“It’s never happened before.”

“Let’s hope it doesn’t happen again. What did you pick up?”

Vincent shook his head. “I spoke to an officer on the Emory Welsch. They’re in water shallower than it’s supposed to be, so the condition is going out to sea.”

“Any others?”

“Two more. They all reported the same thing.”

“What were their positions?”

“All southeast of the Honda coast. Whatever it is, it doesn’t seem to have any effect much north of here.”

He paused for a minute, his face taut. “I’ve got to get back some way, Bill.”

“I wish I could suggest how,” his friend said. “I just spoke to all the marinas in the area. Nothing’s open and any boats out in the ocean are staying there. The Coast Guard is even planning a refueling run to keep anybody out there gassed up.” He waited a moment, studying Vincent’s expression, then said, “You did try all the islands, didn’t you?”

Instead of answering, Vincent simply nodded.

“They wouldn’t leave their radios, would they?”

Vincent let out a sour grunt. “You don’t know that bunch, Bill. To them, the situation isn’t a tragedy at all. It will be one big, grand opportunity to salvage anything that ever touched the ocean’s bottom and they’ll tear anybody apart who gets in their way.”

“But . . . your kid isn’t like that, is he?”

Vincent looked up slowly, his eyes meeting his friend’s. “Bill . . . have you forgotten what a boy’s curiosity is like? You think Larry could resist exploring an empty ocean bottom?”

“So let him, Vinnie. He’s not going to get in anybody’s way, is he?”

“Only if they figure out he knows more about a few things than they do.”

It took a minute for it to sink in; then Bill realized what Vinnie was talking about. “Does he really?” Bill asked him seriously.

“I’m afraid he does,” Vincent told him.
